How to Store Wool Properly

Folded, not hung. Cedar, not plastic. A short field guide to putting wool away so it comes back in shape.

Wool has memory. Left on a hanger through a warm season, a heavy knit will remember the shoulder line of that hanger long after you have forgotten it. Fold instead, loosely, along seams that already exist.

Clean before storing. Moths are drawn to what we leave behind — skin oils, perfume, a trace of salt — far more than to the fibre itself. A gentle wash or a careful press is the cheapest insurance a wardrobe can buy.

Give the drawer air. Cedar and lavender work quietly; sealed plastic traps moisture and dulls the handle of the cloth. Cotton bags, wooden drawers, and a little space between pieces are enough.
