Building a Five Piece Wardrobe

Five garments, chosen slowly, covering most of a life. A framework for buying less and wearing more.

Five garments on wooden hangers against a warm ivory plaster wall

Begin with the coat. It is seen most, worn longest, and forgives the highest price per wear. Everything else can be modest if the outer layer is right.

Then a white shirt, a trouser in mid-weight wool, one knit that suits your climate, and a jacket that can be dressed up or down. Five pieces, one palette, no orphans.

A wardrobe becomes expensive not through quality but through incoherence. Buy toward the pieces you already own.
